Review before your first match

Updated April 2026. Captains should confirm questions early instead of waiting until kickoff.

New Player / First-Time Player

2 questions

New Players
I am a new player. What do I need to do for my first game?

Welcome. Show up to the field with your soccer gear and be ready to play.

Bring soccer cleats or appropriate athletic shoes, shin guards, socks, water, a light and dark backup shirt if you have them, a good attitude, and a little patience while we help get you pointed in the right direction.

If this is your first time playing with us and you do not have your team jersey yet, we will answer questions at the field and give you a temporary jersey grace pass until your team gets you a shirt or you get a league one.

This grace pass is for new players getting started. It is not a season-long workaround for teams that have not handled jerseys.

Does the new-player grace pass mean I can play without shin guards?

No.

The grace pass is for the team shirt/jersey requirement only. Shin guards are still required.

No guards, no play.

Game-Day Must-Haves

4 questions

Game Day
Do I have to wear a jersey?

Yes. Matching team shirts or jerseys are required.

Every player must wear their team's matching shirt or jersey. This helps referees manage the game, helps players quickly identify teammates, and keeps the league looking like an organized league instead of a random pickup game.

If a player shows up without the proper team shirt, the instance may be written down. After repeated instances, the player may be asked not to play until the jersey issue is corrected.

First-time new players may receive a temporary jersey grace pass while they get connected with their team. Shin guards are still required.

Do I have to wear shin guards?

Yes. No guards, no play.

Shin guards are required for every player. This is soccer. Contact happens, kicks happen, and shin guards are part of the basic equipment for the game.

Even professional players wear them. You can too.

What are the non-negotiable game-day requirements?

To step on the field, you need shin guards, your team's matching shirt or jersey unless you are a first-time new player using the temporary grace pass, and eligibility under league rules.

Shin guards are immediate: no guards, no play. Jersey issues are documented first, but repeated issues can lead to a player being asked not to play until corrected.

What happens if I ignore the jersey or shin guard rule?

Without shin guards, you will not play.

If the issue is the team shirt or jersey, the league may document the instance and warn the player or team. Repeated jersey issues can lead to the player being asked not to play until corrected.

Bring your guards. Wear your team shirt. Keep game day moving.

Team Jerseys & League Kits

6 questions

Jerseys
Does everyone on the team need the same shirt?

Yes. Matching shirts are required.

Same team, same shirt. That is the rule.

Different shades of red, three black shirts, one gray shirt, and somebody's old gym shirt do not count as a team kit. It creates confusion for referees, opponents, and your own team.

Our team does not have jerseys yet. Can we still play?

Teams are expected to solve jersey issues before game day.

Teams are expected to have matching shirts or jerseys before playing. If your team does not have them yet, contact the league as soon as possible so we can help you figure out the best option.

If players show up without proper team shirts, those instances may be written down. Repeated problems may lead to players being asked not to play until the issue is corrected.

What if my team cannot decide on jerseys?

Good news: we can make this easy.

The league can help teams get a new jersey kit for a small charge. You do not need to spend weeks debating fonts, colors, sponsor logos, sleeve patterns, or whether somebody's cousin "knows a guy."

Pick a team option, get matching shirts, and be ready to play.

Why are we changing shirts?

Because it has been a few years, and those shirts have lived a full life.

A lot of games have been played in them. A lot of sweat has happened. There are also multiple versions of the old shirts floating around now, and some of the colors have been hard to see during games.

New shirts help clean things up, make teams easier to identify, and give the league a fresh start.

Can we still buy old league jerseys?

Possibly, yes.

If your team is still using an old league kit and only needs a few replacement shirts, we will work with local vendors to source extras when available.

Availability may be limited, so please do not wait until the night before your game.

What happens if two teams have the same color jersey?

Captains should communicate early if there may be a color conflict.

The league may ask one team to wear an alternate color, use pinnies if available, or make another reasonable adjustment so referees and players can tell teams apart.

Schedule, Game Times & Reschedules

4 questions

Schedule
Can we move our game to 10:00 AM?

No, not by request.

We schedule games based on the field time available through the City of Cedar Rapids and Tuma Soccer Complex. We do not have unlimited access to every field at every time.

If the schedule says your game is at a certain time, plan for that time.

Can we reschedule our game?

You can request it, but it is not guaranteed.

Start with your captain. Your captain should work with the opposing captain and the league board. A reschedule only works if both teams agree, the board approves it, and field/referee availability makes sense.

Until the board confirms the change, your original game time is still the official game time.

What happens if our team does not have enough players?

Your team may have to forfeit if it cannot field the minimum number of players required by league rules.

Captains should communicate early if they are short players. Do not wait until kickoff to tell everyone your team cannot play.

What happens if there is bad weather?

The league will communicate cancellations or delays when possible.

Do not assume a game is canceled just because the weather looks questionable. If the league has not canceled the game, teams should plan to show up.

Player Eligibility & Substitutes

4 questions

Eligibility
Can we use substitute players?

Yes, if they are allowed under league rules and are properly registered or approved.

Do not bring random players who are not approved to play. If there is a question, captains should contact the board before the game.

Can I play if I am not on the roster?

Ask before you play.

The league needs to know who is playing, who is eligible, and who is covered. If you are not sure whether you are rostered or cleared, talk to your captain or league staff before stepping onto the field.

Can I play for more than one team?

Only if league rules allow it and the board approves it.

Do not assume you can jump between teams because someone is short players. Captains should clear questions before the game.

Can I play if I am injured or wearing a brace/cast?

Only if it is safe and allowed by the referee and league.

The referee has final authority on whether equipment, braces, casts, or anything else creates a safety issue.

Referees, Conduct & Complaints

4 questions

Conduct
Who do we talk to if we have a problem with a referee?

Talk to your captain first.

Captains may bring concerns to the league board after the game. Do not argue with, harass, or chase down referees during or after games. We need referees to keep the league going.

Can I argue about this at the field?

Please do not.

Captains can ask questions and bring concerns to the board, but game day is not the time for a courtroom drama about socks, shirts, shin guards, or the philosophical meaning of "matching."

The referees and league staff are there to keep games moving.

What happens if a player, captain, or spectator gets out of hand?

The league may remove people from the field area, suspend players, or take other action under league rules.

We want competitive games, not chaos. Keep it adult.

Can spectators come watch?

Yes, spectators are welcome.

They must follow park rules, respect referees and players, and stay off the field and team areas unless allowed.

Park Rules & Spectators

4 questions

Park Rules
Can I bring my dog, cat, iguana, or other pet?

No. Please leave pets at home.

Games are played at a city park, and park rules apply. Rules are posted at the park, and everyone is expected to follow them.

We like animals. We also like keeping our field permits.

Can we drink alcohol at the fields?

No. Follow city park rules.

This is a public park and a permitted league event. Do not create problems that could put our field access or league future at risk.

Where should spectators sit?

Spectators should stay off the field, out of team areas, and away from referee paths.

Give players, captains, and referees room to do their jobs.

Do city park rules apply during league games?

Yes.

We play at city-managed fields. Park rules apply to players, captains, spectators, and anyone else attending league games.
